Chasm Institute Brings Its Newest Books and Innovation Expertise to Japan
Chasm Institute Brings Its Newest Books and Innovation Expertise to Japan
The Japanese economy has long been renowned for its manufacturing expertise and its adherence to the quality principles of kaizen.  While this brought great success to Japan through the 1980s, the economy has yet to fully recover from the bursting of the “Nikkei Bubble” in 1990.  This 25+ year period of tepid growth ties directly to Japan’s struggles in integrating technology advances into its manufactured products…from products with embedded software to new business models based on IoT, AI, machine learning, cognitive computing, and social networks.

Some, like former Sun Microsystems founder Scott McNealy, have recently claimed that Japan simply lacks the ability to innovate, and should instead “buy innovation from others”.  While some would counter this claim with the successes Japan has demonstrated in the gaming industry (Nintendo, Sony, Sega), others point to the struggles of Japan’s many heavy industrial companies that have largely stood witness to the success of manufacturing-driven companies like GE who have embraced the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

In our interactions with Japanese companies in Tokyo over the past year, we have spoken with industry manufacturing and tech leaders who are actively working with IoT, AI, and embedded software solutions.  Japan’s struggles with innovation do not reflect a lack of innovative capabilities in our view; rather, the path from new product innovation to market success lies primarily in the absence of the right frameworks, models, and operating models needed to successfully launch and grow disruptive new products.

More specifically, Japanese companies must come to terms with a traditional business culture that is averse to radical change and disruption.  Such a culture can quash the kind of entrepreneurial culture needed to develop, launch, and grow disruptive innovations.  “The nail that stands up gets hammered down” is an oft quoted saying in Japan that must be addressed when cultivating innovations.

In addition, product innovations in Japan tend to be viewed as the province of engineering teams who lack the market development skills and cross functional support needed to capture and win new markets.

We at Chasm Institute are determined to help Japanese companies develop the skills and culture to win with technology innovation.

Our best selling books from Silicon Valley thought leader Geoffrey Moore are now available in Japanese, including our 3 most recent books “Crossing the Chasm 2.0”, “Escape Velocity”, and soon to be published this Summer, “Zone to Win”.  Our books have sold over 2,000,000 copies worldwide, and reflect our learnings from over 500 engagements during the past 15 years with companies like IBM, GE, Google, Cisco, Salesforce, and many other global companies.

We are now working with both global multinationals operating in Japan, and large traditional Japanese companies operating in manufacturing and tech-based businesses.

We travel to Japan on a quarterly basis where we conduct training programs, seminars, and support in-depth project development…with materials and content available in both English and Japanese.

We are working with business, governmental, and academic leaders on issues tied to open innovation, change management, and winning market development approaches.

And we have just launched our Japanese website…www.chasminstitute.com/jp…where our blogs, published articles, frameworks, models, webinar content, and overall approach to driving new product success is available in Japanese.

Those interested in working with us in Japan can contact our Japan Programs Director, Makoto Akai, at akai@mkt-i.jp.  We look forward to discussing how to successfully launch and grow tech products in Japan, or seeing you on one of our future visits.
